01 Shangyuan Festival: Lantern Festival and Heavenly Official's Blessings
The 15th day of the first lunar month, known as the Lantern Festival or Shangyuan Festival, is one of China's traditional holidays. On this first full moon night of the lunar new year, people light colorful lanterns, admire the bright moon, guess lantern riddles, and eat tangyuan, celebrating with family reunion.

In Taoist culture, this day is when the "Shangyuan Heavenly Official Bestows Blessings." The Heavenly Official, formally titled "Shangyuan Nine Qi Blessing-Bestowing Heavenly Official," belongs to the Yuqing Realm and is formed by the convergence of blue, yellow, and white qi. Every year on this day, he descends to the mortal world to assess people's sins and blessings, hence the term "Heavenly Official Bestows Blessings." The Southern Song text "Mengliang Lu" records: "The 15th day of the first month is the day when the Shangyuan Heavenly Official bestows blessings."

02 The Three Official Emperors and Their Sacred Hymn
The Heavenly Official, together with the Earth Official and Water Official, are known as the "Three Official Emperors." They are respectively the Shangyuan Heavenly Official who bestows blessings, the Zhongyuan Earth Official who pardons sins, and the Xiayuan Water Official who relieves calamities. The Three Officials oversee merits and faults, helping both the living and the deceased. On each Shangyuan, Zhongyuan, and Xiayuan day, they tour the Three Realms to examine all beings.

Those who reverently recite hymns and offer sacrifices to the Three Officials on the 15th day of the first month will receive blessings, sin pardons, and calamity relief, with immeasurable merit. Their sacred hymn reads:

"With utmost sincerity, I bow and take refuge. The three sages embody the Great Ultimate. Receiving the decree of the House of Eternal Calamity, they are praised with infinite titles. Ziwei, Qingxu, Dongyin, they govern merits and faults. Bestowing blessings, pardoning sins, relieving calamities, they universally aid the living and the dead. Their Way transcends the heavens, their grace spreads across the Three Realms. Great compassion, great vows, great sagehood, great mercy. The Three Officials of the Three Primaries, the Emperors of the Three Realms. In the palaces and bureaus of the Three Heavens, they are the Responsive Manifestation Deities."

03 Birthday of the Ancestral Heavenly Master
The 15th day of the first month is also the birthday of the Ancestral Heavenly Master Zhang Daoling. Zhang Ling, courtesy name Fuhan, was a native of Fengyi (now Xuzhou, Jiangsu). He was born on the 15th day of the first month in the 10th year of Jianwu during the Eastern Han Dynasty at Tianmu Mountain in Wu. Today, relics such as Zhenkong Cave, Zhanggong She, and Danchi still exist on Tianmu Mountain in Hangzhou, said to be where the Ancestral Master cultivated.

The Ancestral Master was the eighth-generation descendant of Han Marquis Zhang Liang. Gifted from childhood, he later obtained the Nine Cauldron Alchemical Classic of the Yellow Emperor and received personal transmission from Laozi at Heming Mountain, establishing the Orthodox Unity Way. He founded the teachings, subdued demons, and protected the Way. After completing his cultivation, he ascended to immortality in broad daylight. He received numerous posthumous titles from emperors, such as "Grand Master" from Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, "Perfect Lord of Orthodox Unity and Tranquil Response" from Emperor Huizong of Song, and "Boundless Exalted Emperor" from Emperor Sizong of Ming.

04 Reciting the Sacred Hymn of the Ancestral Heavenly Master Brings Infinite Blessings
On this auspicious birthday, sincerely reciting the Ancestral Heavenly Master's sacred hymn can connect with his protection, eliminate disasters, and increase blessings and longevity. His sacred hymn reads:

"With utmost sincerity, I bow and take refuge. Originally from the southern lands, tracing back to Shu capital. First obtaining the Yellow Emperor's Nine Cauldron Alchemical Classic, later serving the Elder Lord twice at Yujiu. Mastering thousands of scrolls on cultivation essentials, achieving the art of inhalation and exhalation. Completing the Dharma registers, receiving the Alliance of Authority and mastering the Lin formula. Distinguishing right from wrong, seizing the blessed realm and transforming into the Salt Spring. Perfecting the Great Elixir, aligning with the Seven Luminaries. Great compassion, great vows, great sagehood, great mercy. Supporting the Teaching in the Three Heavens, assisting the Mysterious and embodying the Way. Great Dharma Master, Thunder Department Minister. Grand Chancellor of Taixuan, Great Dharma Lord of All Heavens. Perfect Lord of Orthodox Unity, Mysterious Transformation, Tranquil Response, Manifest Assistance. Boundless Exalted Emperor of the Six Directions, Deity of Demon-Subduing and Way-Protecting."

Another sacred hymn:

"With utmost sincerity, I bow and take refuge. Grand Chancellor of Taixuan, supporting the Teaching in the Three Heavens. Receiving true transmission at Heming Mountain, leaving wondrous formulas at Longhu Altar. Three Caverns of Dharma registers, all kinds of sacred scriptures. Twelve hundred spirit armies, supporting the Orthodox Teaching. Twenty-four grades of secret registers, universally saving later generations. Jade Seal of the Capital of Merit, arrayed in official robes. Dwelling in the Capital Department, constantly serving the Emperor, governing the Three Realms and saving the mortal people. Twin swords of Yin and Yang, slaying demons and goblins. Causing rain and clearing skies, roaring thunder and flashing lightning. Thus establishing altars and transforming through teachings, aiding the state and bringing peace to the people. Completing merits and fulfilling deeds, ascending to immortality in broad daylight. The Ancestral Master who supported the Teaching in the Three Heavens, assisted the Mysterious and embodied the Way, the Great Dharma Master, the Orthodox Unity Mysterious Perfect Lord, the Manifest Assistance Perfect Lord, the Boundless Exalted Emperor, the Great Sage Demon-Subduing and Way-Protecting Deity."

05 Celebrating Together, Sharing in Divine Grace
The 15th day of the first month is not only a time for family reunion but also the day when the Heavenly Official bestows blessings and the birthday of the Ancestral Heavenly Master. While enjoying lanterns and tangyuan, we can also burn incense, bow in worship, and recite sacred hymns, praying for the Heavenly Official's blessings and the Ancestral Master's protection, for family well-being and increased wisdom and happiness!
