Why Is It Difficult for Modern People to Cultivate Supernatural Powers, While Ancient People Could?

In today's society, although more and more people are engaged in the practice of Taoist arts and supernatural powers, most report a lack of resonance during their practice and find it difficult to get started. This article explores why modern people struggle to cultivate supernatural abilities from the perspectives of the nature of cultivation, differences in lifestyle between ancient and modern times, and the importance of mental stillness.

The essence of cultivation lies in understanding the rules and energy of nature. Whether it's cultivating the body, the mind, or practicing spells and incantations, the core is to learn to communicate with nature through prolonged observation and personal experience. Ancient people lived simple lives with pure minds, fewer desires, and fewer distractions, making it easier for them to enter a state of "no-self, no-other," thereby naturally comprehending supernatural powers. In contrast, modern people live at a fast pace, chase fame and fortune, and have restless minds, making it difficult to calm down, leading to a broken connection with nature.

Furthermore, cultivation methods are often "taught personally" or "can only be grasped intuitively, not conveyed in words." The ancients naturally understood hand seals and mental techniques through sitting in stillness, chanting scriptures, and meditation. While modern people can imitate the form, they struggle to grasp the essence. The limitations of language and writing make it impossible to fully transmit many subtle sensations. Additionally, the authenticity of texts circulating today is hard to verify, and many fabricated contents, if practiced blindly, could harm one's health.

However, this does not mean that modern people are entirely incapable of cultivation. If one can reduce mental clutter, return to inner peace through sitting meditation and mindfulness, and gradually develop resonance with nature, it is still possible to awaken the innate potential within everyone. Cultivation is a path requiring patience and persistence. Only a very few with profound innate aptitude can comprehend it easily; most people need to learn from the experiences of their predecessors and progress step by step with correct methods.
